A few days before the beginning of the season, I decided to write short presentations of the Italian team's athletes, especially dedicated to those who don't know our athletes yet, also making the point on how we left them before the summer break.
KEVIN FISCHNALLER Cousin of Dominik, he is a really good driver, but he still has to improve in the start phase. It's not a casuality that he got his only podium during a Sprint Cup, in which the start is less important.
Last season: He
took his career's first podium during the Sprint Cup in Igls and closed the
WC with a 17th place in the overall standing.
EMANUEL RIEDER He has been a soccer player since he was a kid and still plays, but he lives in Meransen, where the start track has been an irresistible attraction for him and, as a teenager, Emanuel become also a luger.
Last season: He has finished the WC in
the 19th position of the overall standing.
THEO GRUBER He is the younger in the team (03/24/1996) and during last season he took part both in Junior and senior WC. In the general overall standing has finished 48th, but in the JWC he's been 10th and obtained also a victory in Igls. He has been 11rd in the Junior WCh in Lillehammer
CHRISTIAN OBERSTOLZ/PATRICK GRUBER They are the veterans of the entire luge circuit. Competing together in the National team since 1997, they have no intention to give up. Despite some back problems, normal after twenty years of career in luge, they won the bronze medal at the last WCh in Sigulda.
Last
season: They closed
the WC with a 5th place.

LUDWIG RIEDER/PATRICK RASTNER They are one of the best doubles of the last years, even if so far they haven’t been able to get a victory at senior level. Until the spring of 2014 Ludwig was almost blind because of a severe myopia, then surgically solved.
Last season: They closed the WC 8th in the overall standing and have been 5th at the WCh.
FLORIAN GRUBER/ SIMON KAINZWALDNER This young double (both 1994), Youth Olympic Champions of Innsbruck 2012, has been one of the surprises of last season, ending 10th in the overall standing of the WC. They are the only athletes of the Italian luge National team (with Theo) not recruited in a sport military group.
SANDRA ROBATSCHER In Italy it’s not easy to be a luger and it looks harder for women, but she is completely focalized on her physical and technical development. Nephew of Armin Zöggeler's wife, she is at top level since years between the Juniors (she’s still 19).
Last season: She closed the WC with a 17th place in the overall standing and won the bronze medal at the JWCh in Lillehammer.
ANDREA VÖTTER She has been school mate of Sandra Robatscher and of the natural track champion Greta Pinggera. As her friends also Andrea is still working to improve her technical knowhow to reach better positions. During last summer she has undergone surgery to both shoulders.
Last season: She
closed the WC in 19th position, she's been 5th in the JWCh in Lillehammer and 18th in the WCh of Sigulda, where with the team has been 4th in the Team Relay.
A pochi giorni dall'inizio della stagione, ho deciso di scrivere delle brevi presentazioni degli atleti della squadra italiana, dedicate soprattutto a chi non conoscesse ancora i nostri atleti, facendo anche il punto su come li abbiamo lasciati prima della pausa estiva.
DOMINIK FISCHNALLER Dopo il ritiro di Armin Zöggeler, è l'atleta di punta della squadra. È stato scoperto da Gerda Weissensteiner quando aveva circa 9 anni e da quel momento ha seguito le orme del fratello maggiore Hanspeter, che era uno slittinista e si è ritirato un anno fa.
KEVIN FISCHNALLER Cugino di Dominik, è un ottimo pilota, ma deve ancora migliorare la partenza. Non è un caso che abbia ottenuto il suo unico podio nella Sprint Cup, in cui la partenza è meno importante.
La scorsa stagione: Ha ottenuto il primo podio in carriera durante la Sprint Cup di Igls e ha chiuso la CdM 17°.
EMANUEL RIEDER Gioca a calcio da quando era bambino, ma vive a Maranza, dove il pistino di spinta è stato un'irresistibile attrazione per lui e così, da adolescente, Emanuel divenne anche slittinista.
La scorsa stagione: Ha chiuso la CdM 19°.
THEO GRUBER È il più giovane della squadra (03/24/1996) e durante la scorsa stagione si è diviso tra la CdM Junior e quella senior. Nella classifica generale si è piazzato 48°, ma in quella Junior ha concluso 10° ed ha anche ottenuto una vittoria ad Igls. Ai Mondiali Junior di Lillehammer è arrivato 11°.
CHRISTIAN OBERSTOLZ/PATRICK GRUBER Sono i veterani dell'intero circuito dello slittino. Gareggiano insieme in Nazionale dal 1997, ma non hanno nessuna intenzione di mollare. A dispetto di qualche problemino alla schiena, normale dopo vent'anni di carriera nello slittino, hanno vinto la medaglia di bronzo durante gli ultimi Mondiali di Sigulda.
La scorsa stagione: Hanno concluso la CdM 5°.

LUDWIG RIEDER/PATRICK RASTNER Sono uno dei migliori doppi degli ultimi anni, anche se non sono ancora riusciti ad ottenere una vittoria a livello senior. Fino alla primavera 2014 Ludwig era quasi cieco a causa di una grave miopia, poi risolta chirurgicamente.
La scorsa stagione: Hanno chiuso la CdM all'8° posto della classifica generale e sono stati 5° ai Mondiali.
FLORIAN GRUBER/ SIMON KAINZWALDNER Questo giovane doppio (entrambi 1994), Campioni Olimpici Giovanili ad Innsbruck 2012, è stato una delle sorprese della scorsa stagione, concludendo la CdM al 10° posto. Sono gli unici atleti della Nazionale italiana (insieme a Theo) non arruolati in qualche gruppo sportivo militare.
SANDRA ROBATSCHER In Italia non è facile essere uno slittinista e sembra sia ancora più difficile per le donne, ma lei è completamente focalizzata sul suo miglioramento fisico e tecnico. Nipote della moglie di Armin Zöggeler, da anni è ai massimi livelli tra le Junior (ha ancora 19 anni).
La scorsa stagione: Ha chiuso la CdM 17° ed ha ottenuto la medaglia di bronzo ai Mondiali Junior di Lillehammer.
ANDREA VÖTTER È stata compagna di scuola di Sandra Robatscher e della campionessa di slittino su pista naturale Greta Pinggera. Come le sue amiche anche Andrea sta ancora lavorando per migliorare le proprie conoscenze tecniche, per raggiungere piazzamenti migliori. La scorsa estate si è sottoposta ad interventi chirurgici ad entrambe le spalle.
La scorsa stagione: Ha concluso la CdM in 19° posizione, è stata 5° ai Mondiali Junior di Lillehammer e 18° ai Mondiali di Sigulda, dove con la squadra ha anche ottenuto il 4° posto nella Staffetta.
