Gli Assoluti Italiani sono una vera festa di sport e amicizia. Purtroppo, dopo la chiusura -speriamo temporanea- della pista di Cesana (ITA), negli ultimi tre anni non ho potuto assistervi in loco e devo dire che mi mancano. 

Oggi le gare sono state disputate a Königssee (GER) e hanno visto l'ennesima conferma dei campioni in carica. Sia Christian Oberstolz e Patrick Gruber sia Armin Zöggeler  hanno vinto per l'ottava volta consecutiva dal 2005. Per Zöggeler si tratta addirittura della quindicesima vittoria del titolo. Per Sandra Gasparini, molto più giovane dei colleghi, si tratta del quinto titolo consecutivo.

I giovani compagni di squadra devono quindi aspettare ancora per il sorpasso. Dominick Fischnaller è arrivato infatti secondo, mentre Ludwig Rieder e Patrick Rastner sono partiti in anticipo quando il semaforo era ancora rosso e sono stati squalificati.

Per la rivincita su questa affascinante pista potrebbero bastare due settimane, infatti la Coppa del Mondo riprenderà proprio qui i prossimi 4 e 5 gennaio.

Il risultato degli Assoluti contribuirà circa al 50% alla selezione della squadra che prenderà parte ai XXII Giochi Olimpici Invernali di Sochi (RUS) nel prossimo febbraio. Altri elementi che porteranno Kurt Brugger e Karl Damian alla scelta finale degli atleti che partiranno per la Russia saranno i risultati ottenuti durante la International Training Week (ITW) tenutasi a Sochi lo scorso novembre e l'andamento in CdM.
Quattro anni fa la scelta era stata compiuta con un'apposita gara svoltasi negli stessi giorni degli Assoluti. Un singolo errore aveva portato alla triste esclusione di Willi Huber, in quel momento 3° tra gli Italiani in CdM, da quella che sarebbe stata la sua settima olimpiade. Probabilmente anche questo ricordo ha contribuito a rendere più complessi i parametri di selezione interna.

The Italian Championships are a real celebration of sport and friendship. Unfortunately, after the closure -hopefully temporary- of the track of Cesana (ITA), in the last three years I haven't been able to be on site and I have to say I miss them.

Today's races were disputed in Königssee (GER) and have seen yet another confirmation of defending champions. Both Christian Oberstolz and Patrick Gruber and Zöggeler Armin won for the eighth time in a row since 2005. For Zöggeler is actually the fifteenth title win. For Sandra Gasparini, much younger than colleagues, this is the fifth consecutive title.

The young teammates have then to wait any longer for the eventual overtaking. Dominick Fischnaller finished second, Ludwig Rieder and Patrick Rastner started in advance when the light was still red and were disqualified.

For the revenge on this fascinating track two weeks may be enough, in fact the World Cup will resume here on the next 4th and 5th January.

The result of the I.Ch. will contribute for about the 50% to the selection of the team that will take part in the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi (RUS) next February. Other elements that will bring Kurt Brugger and Karl Damian to the final choice of the athletes who will leave for Russia will be the results obtained during the International Training Week (ITW) held in Sochi last November and the performances in W.C.

Four years ago, the choice had been made with a special race held on the same days of the I.Ch.. A single error had taken to the sad exclusion of Willi Huber, at that time 3rd of the Italians in W.C., from that which would have been his seventh Olympics. Biathlon: Bilancio in chiaroscuro - Biathlon: Recht wechselvoller Auftakt

Un resoconto sulle prime tre tappe di Coppa del Mondo di biathlon è destinato a diventare un mix fra emozioni, momenti esaltanti e – purtroppo – anche qualche delusione. Se a Östersund ci eravamo ancora rallegrati grazie alle ottime performance di Lukas Hofer, Christian De Lorenzi, Karin Oberhofer e Dorothea Wierer, a Hochfilzen, in Austria, ci siamo ben presto resi conti che l’Italia del biathlon aveva perso il contatto con i top della classifica mondiale. Saranno anche state le condizioni della neve, sarà anche stata la stanchezza per la lunga trasferta (ma in fondo quella l’avevano fatti tutti quanti...), ma i risultati sono stati tutt’altro che soddisfacenti per coloro che credono in questa squadra, in questi ragazzi. Meglio sono andate le cose in Francia, ove da fuori abbiamo scoperto prima di tutti un bellissimo tifo, una passione di gente che era rimasta fuori troppo al lungo dal giro “che conta” del biathlon mondiale, e dove anche la squadra azzurra ha ritrovato – almeno a sprazzi – il sorriso. Grazie al settimo e al decimo posto di Lukas Hofer nella sprint e nell’inseguimento, grazie alla grinta delle ragazze, grazie alla precisione di Michela Ponza nel tiro (soltanto che sullo sci perde tanto, troppo tempo). Un finale dell’anno 2013 che lascia ben sperare per il futuro. Si riprenderà in Germania, a Oberhof, a partire dal 3 gennaio.

Ein Rückblick auf die ersten drei Etappen im Biathlonweltcup 2013/14 verspricht aus italienischer Sicht eine Mischung aus Emotionen, Höhepunkten und – leider – auch Enttäuschungen zu werden. Während wir uns im schwedischen Östersund noch über die starken Leistungen von Lukas Hofer, Christian De Lorenzi, Karin Oberhofer und Dorothea Wierer erfreut hatten, kam in Hochfilzen (Österreich) die Ernüchterung, verbunden mit der Erkenntnis, dass die Weltspitze weit voraus war. Mag sein, dass der Schnee speziell war, mag sein, dass die Reisestrapazen bemerkbar waren (aber die anderen hatten auch eine ebenso lange Anreise auf sich genommen), Fakt ist, dass die Ergebnisse alles andere als zufriedenstellend waren. Vornehmlich für die, die an diese italienische Mannschaft glauben. Besser ging es dann schon in Frankreich, wo wir erstens von außen eine schöne Begeisterung erleben durften, eine Leidenschaft von Menschen, die zu lange vom „großen“ Biathlonzirkus ausgeschlossen gewesen waren. Und wo auch die italienische Mannschaft zumindest teilweise uns wieder ein Lächeln ins Angesicht gezaubert hat. Dank dem siebten und zehnten Platz von Lukas Hofer bei Sprint und Verfolgung. Dank dem drahtigen Auftritt der Mädchen im Team. Dank der Präzision von Michela Ponza beim Schießen (die allerdings viel, zu viel Zeit im Laufen einbüßt). Das Ende des Jahres 2013 war versöhnlich, lässt positiv in die Zukunft blicken. Weiter geht es ab dem 3. Jänner in Oberhof, in Deutschland.

Slittino. Qualificarsi per le olimpiadi è troppo facile? - Luge. Qualifying for the Olympics is too easy?

Il fine settimana di gare a Whistler Mountains (CAN), di cui sottolineo solo lo splendido podio di Dominik Fischnaller e il fantastico secondo posto del mio amico Chris Mazdzer, mi dà lo spunto per affrontare l'annosa questione dei parametri cui adempiere per qualificarsi ai Giochi Olimpici. Quattro anni fa, per poter competere su questa pista da "fionde" bastava che uno slittinista avesse fatto 10 discese ufficiali nelle ultime due stagioni. D I E C I...  Io sono scesa con lo slittino 2 volte, ma sicuramente se facessi altre 8 discese non sarei una slittinista. Non sarei in grado di correre neanche la "Coppa del Nonno", figuriamoci le Olimpiadi! 

Nella stagione olimpica, le federazioni di molti paesi in cui il ghiaccio si trova solo nel freezer, iscrivono atleti alla Coppa del Mondo, nella speranza che si qualifichino per i Giochi e portino al proprio paese le sovvenzioni del CIO. Per quegli atleti senza esperienza la chance di competere in questo sport alle Olimpiadi è un sogno molto pericoloso. Quattro anni fa, Nodar Kumaritashvili, un ragazzo georgiano di 21 anni, vide nello slittino una possibilità di riscatto e affermazione. Nodar era arrivato a Whistler per gareggiare alle XXI Olimpiadi Invernali, dopo aver sceso solo 11 run ufficiali. Portò a termine le ultime 3 a Cesana Torinese (ITA), dove era arrivato  con lo zio appena in tempo per la Nations Cup. Erano partiti dalla Georgia per Mosca. Lì avevano affittato un'auto e guidato alternandosi per quattro giorni. Fu l'ultimo dei qualificati e concluse la gara 28°, a quasi 6'' da Zöggeler, ma ottenne il via libera per i Giochi Olimpici di Vancouver. Purtroppo sappiamo che il suo tragico destino si compì prima della cerimonia inaugurale. Nel punto di massima velocità della pista, dove in allenamento erano già caduti anche gli esperti Armin Zöggeler e Felix Loch, inspiegabilmente non c'erano protezioni e Nodar volò fuori morendo sul colpo. Tutte le inchieste successive hanno attribuito il 100% della responsabilità all'atleta scomparso. Dopo la sua tragica fine, gli addetti della pista di Cesana sono ancora distrutti dai sensi di colpa: avessero saputo a cosa avrebbe portato la sua incosciente inesperienza avrebbero addotto qualche scusa per impedirgli di qualificarsi...

Quest'anno ci saranno le Olimpiadi a Sochi (RUS) e il numero di nazioni che partecipano alla CdM è cresciuto esponenzialmente. Ho verificato i requisiti richiesti dalla FIL. Agli uomini sarà sufficiente fare punti in 5 tappe di CdM (ndr: il solo portare a termine la discesa di Nations Cup dà 1 punto) o fare 20 punti in due gare (ndr: 10 punti vanno al 31°, 20 al 21°) entro il 31 dicembre 2013. Qualche richiesta in più per i peggiori (vedi link in calce). La pista russa è tecnica e veloce  Ha senso che parametri così ...democratici... vengano applicati anche a uno sport bellissimo, difficile e pericoloso come lo slittino? Ha senso che giovani un po' incoscienti in cerca di una via di affermazione nella vita mettano a rischio la propria sicurezza e la propria incolumità?

The weekend at Whistler Mountains (CAN), of which I emphasize just Dominik Fischnaller's wonderful podium and the fantastic second place of my friend Chris Mazdzer, gives me an opportunity to address the old issue of the parameters to qualify for the Olympics. Four years ago, in order to compete on this "for slingshots" track, 10 official runs were enough to a luger.. T E N .. I made 2 runs and I'm sure that if I made 8 more I wouldn't turn into a luger. I wouldn't be able to compete even in the "Granny's Cup", let alone in the Olympics!

In the Olympic season the federations of many countries where ice is found only in the freezer, enroll athletes in the World Cup, hoping they qualify for the Games and bring to their country the IOC's subsidization. For those inexperienced athletes the chance to compete in luge at the Olympics is a very dangerous dream. Four years ago, Nodar Kumaritashvili, a 21 years old Georgian guy, saw in luge a chance for redemption and affirmation. Nodar had come to Whistler to compete at the XXI Olympic Winter Games, having made only 11 official run. He run the last 3 in Cesana Torinese (ITA), where he arrived  with his uncle just in time for the Nations Cup. They had left Georgia for Moscow, where they rented a car and drove alternately for four days. He was the last of qualified and finished the race 28th, almost 6'' from Zöggeler, but got the go-ahead for the Olympic Games in Vancouver. Unfortunately, we know that his tragic destiny was fulfilled before the opening ceremony. In the maximum speed point of the track, where during the training even the experts Armin Zöggeler and Felix Loch had already fallen, inexplicably there were no protections and Nodar flew out dying instantly. All subsequent investigations have ascribed the 100% of the responsibility to the passed away athlete. After his tragic demise, the attendants of Cesana's track are still destroyed by feelings of guilt: if they had known what his unconscious inexperience would have bring, they would have put forward some excuse to keep him from qualifying...

This year there will be the Olympics in Sochi (RUS) and the number of nations participating in the World Cup has grown exponentially. I checked out the requirements to qualify set by FIL. For men will be enough to score points in 5 W.C. events (note: complete the run of Nations Cup gives 1 point) or make 20 points in two events (note: the 31st gets 10 points, the 21st gets 20) by 31 December 2013. Some more requirement for the worst (see link below). The Russian track is fast and technical. Does it make sense to apply so ... democratic...  parameters also to a beautiful, difficult and dangerous sport as luge? Does it make sense that some reckless young men and women, looking for a way of affirmation in life put at risk their own safety?

L'importanza dell'informazione...corretta - The importance of a correct information

La maggior parte delle persone acquisisce informazioni in modo indiretto, tramite giornali, internet, TV, ma alcuni giornalisti "sacerdoti" designati della verità, tradiscono questo compito perseguono l'audience a qualsiasi costo, indipendentemente dalla realtà e degli eventuali problemi che potrebbero causare seminando zizzania. 

La prima volta in cui venne chiesto a me di gestire l'incontro con un giornalista, che raccoglieva informazioni prima dell'inizio della stagione. Ero letteralmente terrorizzata all'idea di dire qualcosa di troppo o di sbagliato, di rivelare qualcosa di privato. Ma non tutti siamo uguali.

Tempo fa lessi un'intervista ad Armin Zöggeler. Ci conosciamo da anni e ho avuto il raro privilegio di parlargli diverse volte a titolo personale. E' un vero uomo-squadra, collaborativo, amichevole, felice dei buoni risultati dei compagni. Leggendo quell'articolo, di suo vedevo la foto, leggevo dati statistici, ma non riconoscevo le parole, gli atteggiamenti, la persona che emergeva tra le righe. Si delineava l'immagine di un egocentrico spocchioso in aperto conflitto con tutti gli altri atleti, non la sua.

Sappiamo che i nostri slittinisti sono di poche parole e spesso quelle che dicono sono in Italo-Tedesco. Gli errori in buona fede capitano a tutti, ma alcuni fraintendimenti, come nel caso di quell'intervista, a me sembrano cercati con l'idea di ventilare (inesistenti) conflitti tra compagni di squadra, che potrebbero solleticare la curiosità cinica di alcuni lettori.

Per me scrivere è un hobby e quando mi imbatto in queste mancanze di etica e professionalità, ai danni di amici, per giunta, mi sento delusa e quasi offesa.


Most people gets information in an indirect way, through newspapers, internet, TV, but some journalists, truth's designated "priests", betray this task, pursuing audience at any cost, regardless of reality and of any problem that may cause sowing disagreement.

The first time I was asked to manage the meeting with a journalist, who was collecting information before the beginning of the season. I was literally terrified to say too much or something wrong, to disclose something private. However not everyone is the same.

Some time ago I read an interview with Armin Zöggeler. We known each other since years and I've had the rare privilege to talk to him several times. He is a real team-man, collaborative, friendly, happy for  his mates' good results. Reading that article, I saw his picture, I read his statistical data, but I didn't recognize his words, his attitudes, the person that emerged between the lines. The article outlined the image of a self-centered arrogant person, in open conflict with all the other athletes, not Armin's image.

We know that our lugers don't say many words and often the ones they say are in Italo-German. Good faith errors happen to anyone, but some misunderstandings, as in the case of that interview, seem searched with the idea to ventilate (nonexistent) conflicts between team-mates, which might tickle curiosity in certain cynical readers.

Writing for me is an hobby and when I come across these failings of ethics and professionality, even  worst when against friends, I feel disappointed and almost hurted.

Indossare la stessa divisa non rende una squadra.

Chi non ha a che fare con lo sport professionistico potrebbe pensare che ciò non valga tra atleti di calibro internazionale, ma si sbaglia di grosso.

La dinamica di gruppo in una squadra è degna di manuali di sociologia.

Le persone con un lavoro "normale" idealizzano la vita degli sportivi, senza pensare che quello che fanno è un lavoro a tutti gli effetti, con l'aggravante che spesso si trovano anche costretti a dividere la stanza e a consumare i pasti con persone che non sceglierebbero come amiche. Queste condizioni estreme possono portare a due situazioni: l'estrema unione o l'estremo frazionamento.

Frequentando il mondo dello slittino per anni, mi sono resa conto che squadre che dall'esterno sembrano estremamente coese, risultano talmente divise al proprio interno, che i diversi gruppi o soggetti non si rivolgono nemmeno la parola e mantengono un atteggiamento appena civile solo quando strettamente necessario. Altre sono talmente unite che ognuno si sente quasi in dovere di intromettersi nella vita privata dei suoi compagni. 

Fortunatamente, nella maggior parte delle squadre il clima che si respira è di reale amicizia e affiatamento, ma all'esterno spesso prende il sopravvento l'incitamento per il proprio beniamino, e viene messo in evidenza l'antagonismo tra compagni. In Germania, ad esempio, lo slittino è seguito da milioni di fans appassionati e tifare per Geisenberger o per Hüfner, per Loch o per Möller è come tifare per l'Inter o per la Juve, per il Barcellona o il Real Madrid.

Who has not to do with professional sport might think that such a situation is impossible in that area, but they're wrong.

The group dynamic of a team is worthy of sociology manuals.
People with a "normal" job idealize athletes' life, without thinking that what they do is work in all respects, with the aggravating circumstance that often they are forced to share the room and have meals with people that not always would choose as friends. These extreme conditions can lead to two situations: the extreme union or the extreme division.

Frequenting for years Luge world, I realized that some teams which seem extremely cohesive from the outside, are so fractionated that different groups or athletes don't even talk with each other and maintain a civil attitude just when strictly necessary. Other are so united that everyone feels almost compelled to intermeddle into his teammates' private lives.

Fortunately, in the majority of teams the atmosphere is of real friendship and togetherness, but outside the incitement for their favorite often takes over and the antagonism between mates is highlighted. In Germany, for example, Luge is followed by millions of passionate fans and cheer for Geisenberger or for Hüfner, for Loch or for Möller is like rooting for Inter or Juventus, for Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Un appello alla solidarietà per Csaba Cseke - Solidarität für Csaba Cseke

Csaba Cseke è stato per tanti anni uno degli atleti più simpatici del biathlon mondiale. Rappresentava l’Ungheria, nazione non proprio al vertice della classifica mondiale, ma che fa pur anche parte della grande “famiglia” del biathlon.

Ora il ragazzo è stato colpito da un gravissimo lutto. Sua moglie Edina, che gli aveva regalato due coppie di gemelli (ora hanno rispettivamente sei e tre anni), durante una passaggiata è crollata a terra ed è deceduta sul colpo. Csaba è rimasto solo col suo dolore – e con quattro bambini in tenera età da educare.

Vorrei lanciare un appello a tutti gli amici dello sport, a tutta la grande famiglia degli sport invernali: Diamo un aiuto, un sostegno a Csaba e ai suoi piccoli. Vogliamo aprirci a tutti coloro che vogliono aiutare, coinvolgendo la Federazione Internazionale (IBU) e tutti gli uomini “di buona volontà”. Scriveteci, sostenete prego il carissimo Csaba!

Csaba Cseke ist über Jahre hinweg einer der nettesten Sportler im internationalen Biathlonsport gewesen. Er startete für sein Heimatland Ungarn, sicher nicht eine der Spitzennationen im internationalen Biathlon. Aber die Biathlonfamilie kennt ja bekanntlich keine Grenzen…

Nun wurde Csaba vom Schicksal brutal getroffen. Seine Ehefrau Edina, die ihm zweimal zwei wunderbare Zwillinge geschenkt hatte, ist während eines Spazierganges plötzlich zusammengebrochen und verstorben. Csaba ist allein zurückgeblieben – in seinem Schmerz, mit vier unmündigen Kindern (sie sind sechseinhalb und dreieinhalb Jahre alt).

Ich möchte hier an alle Sportfreunde einen Appell schicken, Csaba in irgend einer Form zu unterstützen. Auch hier möchten wir unseren Beitrag leisten, die Internationale Biathlon Union (IBU) ist auch eingeschaltet worden, um dem Sportler und seiner jungen Familie unter die Arme zu greifen. Schreibt uns, ihr „Menschen guten Willens“, wir wollen dem lieben Csaba unsere Unterstützung bekunden und auch konkret umsetzen!

Biathlon - Svezia in chiaroscuro

La prima tappa di Coppa del Mondo di biathlon (a Östersund, in Svezia) ha visto gli azzurri protagonisti nella prima parte, un po‘ più in sordina nella seconda fase. Ottimo il sesto posto di Lukas Hofer nell’individuale, come anche la settima posizione del valtellinese Christian De Lorenzi nella stessa gara. Dorothea Wierer – sempre nell’individuale – ha raggiunto con l’ottava piazza la sua migliore prestazione di sempre, Karin Oberhofer ha concluso in nona posizione.

Sono andate più maluccio le cose nella sprint, mentre l’inseguimento ha visto una decisione scandalosa della giuria, che ha interrotto la competizione femminile dopo tre serie di tiri (con la bielorussa Domracheva in testa e con la “nostra” Dorothea Wierer in grandissimo recupero al quinto posto), a causa del forte vento. Che in fondo soffiava per tutti.

Nello sport all’aperto anche ciò fa parte del gioco. Questo è ciò che penso io, vecchio appassionato di biathlon.

Il doppio apre la due giorni di gare a Winterberg con un secondo e un terzo posto per l'Italia. 

Alle spalle degli irraggiungibili Wendl-Arlt, Oberstolz-Gruber -il doppio più longevo ancora in attività- conquistano la piazza d'onore, seguiti dai connazionali Rieder-Rastner a pari merito con gli austriaci Penz-Fischler.

Per i giovani azzurri si tratta del primo podio "senior", giunto a suggellare la loro costante crescita delle ultime stagioni. Proprio su questa pista l'anno scorso si erano fermati ai piedi del podio su cui oggi sono meritatamente saliti al termine di due buone manches. Devono dire grazie anche ai nervi saldi che, invece, hanno tradito gli esperti tedeschi Eggert-Benecken, ribaltatisi nella seconda discesa.

Dopo una lunga e fremente attesa -dal 9 febbraio 2013, giorno della vittoria a Lake Placid- sabato pomeriggio è arrivato il 100° podio di Armin Zöggeler, al termine di una gara tutt'altro che scontata.

Questo risultato segna l'ennesimo record del Maresciallo di Foiana, che nella classifica dei più vincenti in CdM individuale, ad oggi, distacca di 27 lunghezze il suo immediato inseguitore, l'austriaco Markus Prock.

Durante la Flower Ceremony negli occhi di Armin, che chi non l'ha mai conosciuto crede algido e distaccato, è apparsa una lacrima, riflesso della sensibilità che chi lo conosce apprezza in lui.

La gara nel suo complesso è stata fortemente condizionata dal meteo altalenante. La prima discesa è stata sospesa a metà e poi annullata. I giudici hanno dunque deciso di far disputare un'unica manches. Da diversi anni non si verificava una situazione simile e viene il sospetto che, senza i condizionamenti delle dirette TV, sarebbero state rinviate e corse le due discese.

Inaspettatamente la vittoria è andata al giovane tedesco Chris Eißler, già vincitore della CdMJ due anni fa e secondo lo scorso anno, ma alla sua prima apparizione fra i "senior". Il progressivo peggiorare delle condizioni della pista dopo la sua discesa ha reso la vita difficile ai migliori, così Möller, Loch e Dominik Fischnaller si sono piazzati in quest'ordine alle spalle di Zöggeler. Buon 8° posto di Emanuel Rieder. 

La Staffetta a squadre ha chiuso il weekend di gare in modo decisamente rocambolesco.

L'Italia ha conquistato una meritata vittoria stabilendo il nuovo record della pista, fermando a 7 la serie di vittorie consecutive della Germania. Nonostante non vi sia stato alcun problema tecnico, la gara è stata caratterizzata da episodi quasi comici. I canadesi Walker-Snith sono partiti in netto anticipo rispetto all'apertura del cancelletto, con il semaforo ancora rosso, prima che Edney terminasse la discesa. Viene da chiedersi se per le donne sia stato particolarmente faticoso correre la competizione a squadre subito dopo la propria gara individuale dal momento che quasi tutte hanno avuto grossi problemi. Ad eccezione di Gasparini, Hansen, Reithmayer, Kuls e Gough tutte hanno avuto difficoltà e in 5 casi hanno compromesso la gara di tutta la squadra. Natalie Geisenberger, dominatrice del singolo femminile, rimbalzando come una pallina del flipper in partenza, ha portato la Germania a finire 9° persino dopo la Corea. 

Con l'incipit di questa stagione, la squadra italiana ha visto le sue giovani promesse diventare splendide realtà sia nel singolo sia nel doppio. Sicuramente, però, non si può ancora parlare di "ricambio generazionale" perché Christian Oberstolz e Patrick Gruber così come Armin Zöggeler non hanno nessuna intenzione di lasciare via libera ai giovani connazionali, trovando invece in questa rinnovata competizione interna, mancata negli ultimi anni, uno stimolo per proseguire e allungare il proprio palmares. Sarà interessante assistere agli Assoluti Italiani dopo il rientro dalla trasferta americana.

The Double opens the two-days in Winterberg with a 2nd and a 3rd place for Italy. 

Behind the unachievable Wendl-Arlt, Oberstolz-Gruber-the longer-lasting double still in activity- capture the 2nd step of the podium, followed ex aequo by the compatriots Rieder-Rastner and the Austrians Penz-Fischler.

For the young Italians is the 1st "senior" podium, come to seal their constant growth of the past seasons. On this track last year they stopped at the foot of the podium. Now they deservedly climb on it with two good heats. They have to thank also the steadiness of their nerves which betrayed the expert Germans Eggert-Benecken, which crashed in the second run. 

After a long wait -since February 9th 2013, when he won in Lake Placid- on Saturday afternoon came  Armin Zöggeler's 100th podium at the end of a far from obvious race.

This achievement marks another peerless record of the Marshal of Foiana, which in World Cup, at the moment, has gained 27 podiums more than the Austrian Markus Prock, his immediate pursuer.

During the Flower Ceremony a tear appeared in Armin's eyes. People who have never known him believe he's icy and aloof, but anyone who knows him saw this as a reflection of his sensibility.

The race has been greatly affected by the changeable weather. The first manche was suspended and then canceled. The jury decided to restart with only one World Cup run. Since several years it doesn't happen anything like this and I suspect that, without live TV's conditionings, they would have ran the two manches delayed.

Unexpectedly, victory went to the young German Chris Eißler, former winner of WCJ two years ago and 2nd last year, but at his first "senior" competition. The progressive worsening of track's conditions made life hard to the best classified, so Möller, Loch and Dominik Fischnaller finished in this order behind Zöggeler. Good 8th place for Emanuel Rieder.

Team Relay closed the weekend in a definitely thrilling way.

Italy celebrated a deserved victory setting a new track record and stopping Germany at 7 victories in a row. Although there has been no technical problems, the race was characterized by almost comical episodes. Canadians Walker-Snith started before the gate opening, with the light still red, while Edney was still ending his run. It looks that for women was particularly hard to run the team competition immediately after their individual race, by the moment that almost all of them have had big troubles. Except Gasparini, Hansen, Reithmayer, Kuls and Gough, the others made many mistakes and in 5 cases compromised the race of their team. Natalie Geisenberger, dominatrix of women's single, bouncing like in a pinball from the start, led Germany to finish 9th, even behind Korea.

In this season's incipit, the Italian team has seen its young promises becoming wonderful realities both in single and in double. However, we can not yet speak of a "generational change" because Christian Oberstolz and Patrick Gruber as well as Armin Zöggeler have no intention to leave green light to the young teammates, finding instead in this renewed inner competition an incentive to continue and to extend their palmares. It will be interesting to watch the  Italian Championship after the return from America.

Al via anche i giovani - Auch die Junioren sind am Start

Partiranno il prossimo fine settimana gli juniores dello slittino. L’avvio della Coppa del Mondo “minore” è prevista sulla pista di Altenberg, ma la notizia del giorno è che Andrea Vötter e Sandra Robatscher continueranno per un ulteriore fine settimana a gareggiare coi “grandi”. Il responsabile FISI Karl Damian infatti ha “dirottato” le due giovani slittiniste verso Winterberg, dove si svolgerà contemporaneamente la terza tappa di Coppa del Mondo. Alla Vötter e alla Robatscher verrà così data un’ulteriore possibilità di qualificazione in vista di una possibile partecipazione olimpica a Sochi.

La squadra junior intanto, capitanata da Klaus Kofler, ha raggiunto l’innevata località di Altenberg. Insieme al responsabile Kofler hanno seguito la squadra Willy Huber e Günther Taschler, che hanno convocato il doppio Gruber/Kainzwaldner nonché i ragazzi della categoria “Giovani A”, ovvero Fabian Malleier, Manuel Schwärzer, Lukas Gufler e Jasmin Welscher.

“Abbiamo lavorato sodo in fase di preparazione, ora siamo ansiosi di vedere il riscontro in gara”, ha commentato lapalissianamente Klaus Kofler. Si parte ad Altenberg, poi prima di Natale sono ancora previste le tappe di Winterberg e Lillehammer. Là saranno anche presenti la Vötter e la Robatscher, che non affronteranno la lunga trasferta in America.

Momento-clou della stagione saranno i mondiali juniores, previsti per fine gennaio a Igls, in Austria.

Am Wochenende beginnt der Junioren-Weltcup der Kunstbahnrodler. Doch die Nachricht des Tages ist, dass Andrea Vötter (21. in Igls) und Sandra Robatscher noch einmal im „großen“ Weltcup zum Einsatz kommen werden. Der Verantwortliche Karl Damian hat die beiden 18jährigen nach Winterberg beordert, wo sie weiter um Weltcuppunkte und eine mögliche Olympiaqualifikation fahren werden.

Die Junioren sind indes unter der Leitung von Klaus Kofler ins tief verschneite Altenberg gereist. Der Trainer aus Kastelbell und seine Mitarbeiter Willy Huber und Günther Taschler haben das Doppel Gruber/Kainzwaldner mitgenommen, dazu die Jugendlichen Fabian Malleier, Manuel Schwärzer, Lukas Gufler und Jasmin Welscher.

„Wir haben gut gearbeitet, jetzt sind wir gespannt auf die Wettkämpfe“, fasst Klaus Kofler zusammen. In Altenberg geht es heuer los, dann sind vor Weihnachten noch die Junioren-Weltcupstationen in Winterberg und in Lillehammer vorgesehen. Dann auch wieder mit Andrea Vötter und Sandra Robatscher, die die lange Reise der Weltcupathleten nach Überseee nicht mitmachen werden.

Saisonshöhepunkt ist die Junioren-WM Ende Jänner in Igls.

Slittino. Seconda tappa di CdM a Igls - Luge. Second WC event in Igls

Sono appena rientrata da Igls e come spesso mi succede quando assisto alle gare in loco, ho mille idee, mille pensieri ed emozioni che si accavallano e spintonano per uscire.

Probabilmente per molti sarà difficile capire, ma sono dell'idea che, per scrivere di slittino -e probabilmente di ogni altra cosa- bisognerebbe averlo vissuto direttamente almeno una volta per essere in grado di trasmettere ai lettori qualcosa più dei dati statistici che costituiscono la gran maggioranza degli articoli che leggo su questo sport.

Del fine settimana più che un racconto lineare mi restano degli highlights.

Viaggiare per ore per raggiungere il Tirolo e ritrovarsi sulla pista delle Olimpiadi del 1964 e del 1976, prima costruita per ospitare sia il bob, sia lo skeleton, sia lo slittino e modello per tutte quelle più recenti.

Vedere una Nations Cup con più di 30 nazioni coinvolte ed il pianto dirotto e inconsolabile di Sandra Robatscher, arrivata solo 22° e non qualificata su quella che per lei è quasi la pista di casa.

Assistere al tributo collettivo di tutti i presenti ad Armin Zöggeler, che tanti scommettono si ritirerà a fine stagione. 

Capire ben presto che la Germania è sempre la Germania e sulle piste che le sono più congeniali continua ad essere un vera superpotenza capace di vincere in tutte 4 le discipline di Coppa del Mondo, lasciando solo il terzo gradino del podio a Dominik Fischnaller nel singolo uomini e la medesima piazza agli Austriaci Penz-Fischler nel doppio.

Avere, d'altro canto, la consolante impressione che, nella stagione olimpica di Sochi, le altre squadre ci siano eccome. L'Austria padrone di casa, oltre al risultato del già citato doppio, si piazza 5° nella competizione a squadre e fa arrivare nella stessa posizione i fratelli Linger e Nina Reithmayer nelle rispettive gare. Il Canada, piuttosto deludente nelle competizioni individuali, agguanta la piazza d'onore nella staffetta a squadre. L'Italia, oltre al secondo podio consecutivo di Dominik Fischnaller, che mantiene la testa della classifica generale in coabitazione con i tedeschi Loch e Möller, conquista il 3° posto nella Team Relay e sfiora il podio con Oberstolz - Gruber, 4° per 5 millesimi di secondo...meno di un battito di ciglia...e con Armin Zöggeler, 5° a soli 46 millesimi dal giovane connazionale non tanto per aver sfiorato la parete sinistra durante la seconda manche, ma perché questa traiettoria errata l'ha portato in un punto in cui la neve presente in pista ha rallentato la sua slitta. Gli Stati Uniti, che portano il sorprendente Mazdzer al suo miglior risultato in carriera davanti al maresciallo di Foiana e giunge 4° così come la squadra nel Team Relay.


Just back from Igls and, as frequently appens to me when I wach a competition on the venue, I've a thousand ideas, a thousend thoughts and emotions fighting to come out.

Probably many won't understand, but my idea is that, to write about luge -or anything else- people would have to live it in loco at least one time to be able transmiting to the readers something more than statistic data, as the large majority of articles on this sport does.

Of last weekend remain me some highlights.

To travel for hours to reach Tirol and to arrive on the 1964 and 1976 Olympic Winter Games' track, the first made to host bobsleigh, luge and skeleton and prototipe for all the newer.

To watch a Nations Cup with more than 30 countries competing and the inconsolable tears of Sandra Robatscher, arrived only 22nd and not qualified on the one that she almost consider her home track.

To attend the collective tribute to Armin Zöggeler, that many are betting will close his career at the end of the season.

To understand that Germany is always Germany and on its more congenial tracks remains a real superpower able to win in all the four disciplines of the World Cup, leaving just the 3rd spot of the podium to Dominik Fischnaller in Men's single and the same position to the austrian double Penz-Fischler.

To have, on the other hand, the comforting impression that, in the Sochi Olympic season, the other teams are all right there. The hosting Austria, in addition to the result of the already mentioned double, finished 5th in the team competition and got the same position with the Linger brothers and Nina Reithmayer in their respective races. Canada, rather disappointing in the individual competitions, posted a second-place finish in the Team Relay. Italy, beyond the second consecutive podium of Dominik Fischnaller, which keeps the head of the overall standing in cohabitation with Germans Loch and Möller, placed 3rd in the Team Relay and finished close to the podium with Oberstolz - Gruber, 4th just 5 thousandths of a second ...less than a blink of an eye... and 5th with Armin Zöggeler, just 46 milliseconds from the younger teammate, not because he almost touched the left wall during the second run, but because this wrong trajectory brought him to a point where the snow in the track slowed his sleigh. The United States, that brought the surprising Mazdzer to his best career result arriving before the Marshal of Foiana and claiming the 4th position as well as the team in the Relay.

Una buona partenza per i ragazzi del biathlon - Ein guter Start für unsere Biathleten

Parallelamente alla Coppa del mondo di slittino, che ho vissuto con il cuore in gola a bordo pista (e Paola ci scriverà di certo un bel resoconto), è partita anche la stagione di Coppa del biathlon. La prima partenza era fissata nel nord, nella cittadina svedese di Östersund. Staffetta mista, ovvero due donne e due uomini. Per l’Italia lo staff tecnico ha mandato in pista un quartetto interamente sudtirolese, che ha infine ottenuto un bel risultato. Dorothea Wierer al lancio ha come di consueto combattuto come una leonessa, poi Karin Oberhofer con una prova eccellente ha dato il cambio ai maschi in terza posizione. Qui Dominik Windisch è incorso in diversi errori ed è stato penalizzato con due giri di penalità. Per fortuna che la squadra azzurra in ultima frazione può vantare un Lukas Hofer, che è partito a razzo, ha centrato i bersagli, è volato una seconda volta lungo il tracciato, ha ricentrato tutti I bersagli e si è involato verso il traguardo, che ha tagliato in quinta posizione. Soltanto che chi lo precedeva – il fenomeno francese Martin Fourcade – aveva commesso degli errori e una scorrettezza, che hanno affibbiato ai transalpini una penalità di due minuti. E così l’Italia è risalita in quarta posizione, battuta solo da Repubblica Ceca, Norvegia e Ucraina.

Un avvio incoraggiante, io sono già fremente in attesa delle prossime competizioni.

Parallel zu den Weltcup-Rodelrennen in Igls, die ich mit pochendem Herzen vor Ort miterleben durfte (und Paola wird sicher dazu einen Bericht liefern), begann auch die Weltcupsaison der Biathleten. Der erste Start erfolgte im hohen Norden, im schwedischen Östersund, und eine Mix-Staffel stand auf dem Programm. Zwei Frauen, zwei Männer pro Nation. Für Italien wurden vier Südtiroler ins Rennen geschickt, und sie machten ihre Sache gut. Eine wie üblich drahtige Dorothea Wierer vorne weg, dann Karin Oberhofer, die exzellent arbeitete, ermöglichten den Wechsel zu den Männern an der dritten Position. Dann aber patzte leider Dominik Windisch, musste zweimal in die Strafrunde. Zum Glück hat man aber am Schluss einen Könner wie Lukas Hofer. Der junge Pusterer lief und traf, lief und traf und lief wieder wie der Blitz, konnte Boden gut machen und als Fünfter über die Ziellinie laufen. Da aber vor ihm der letzte Franzose, Martin Fourcade, in Führung liegend eine Reihe an Patzern und vor allem eine Regelwidrigkeit verübt hatte, bekam die „Equipe Tricolore“ zwei Strafminuten aufgebrummt, so dass am Ende die „Azzurri“ den vierten Platz feiern konnten.

Vorne klassierten sich nur die Tschechische Republik, Norwegen und die Ukraine.

Ein ermutigender Start in die Saison, ich zittere schon den nächsten Wettkämpfen entgegen.

Lo slittino è una grande famiglia e come tutte le famiglie, quando un nuovo membro si affaccia per entrare a farne parte, lo scruta scettica e lo "analizza" prima di accoglierlo. Nessuno mai riceverà una lettera di benvenuto, ma ci si accorge subito se si viene accettati. Improvvisamente gli sguardi diffidenti vengono rimpiazzati da sorrisi, tutti sanno il tuo nome..qualcuno, addirittura, comincia a storpiarlo in nomignoli ad hoc. E ti accorgi che anche tu conosci i loro, anche quello del cagnone che si aggira sempre indisturbato nei paraggi e che sa che non deve abbaiare.

Lo slittino è una grande famiglia e come tutte le famiglie, tra i suoi componenti ci sono personaggi di cui non si potrebbe fare a meno. Quelli di cui non si nota tanto la presenza, quanto l'assenza. Quelli che ti fanno sentire a casa, che quando sei a bordo pista cerchi istintivamente e quando sei seduto sul divano davanti alla TV vedi aggirarsi sullo sfondo delle inquadrature.

Lo slittino è una grande famiglia e come tutte le famiglie è composta da più nuclei, uniti nella FIL, ma ben distinti fra loro: i rappresentanti della Federazione, le squadre, i giornalisti, gli operatori delle singole piste, i tifosi. Pur consapevoli di esser parte dello stesso mondo, i rappresentanti dei diversi nuclei sono animati da un proprio campanilismo che, in alcune circostanze, li mette in contrapposizione e antagonismo rispetto agli altri.

Lo slittino è una grande famiglia e come tutte le famiglie in alcune occasioni si riunisce in cene conviviali. Quando, durante una di queste cene nel gennaio 2012, mi sono sentita dire da uno dei componenti sine qua non: "Lo slittino è una grande famiglia e tu ne fai parte" ho realizzato di essere diventata per davvero un componente di quel mondo. Anche se ancora oggi non so definire il mio ruolo in quell'ambito, sono consapevole di averne uno.

Luge is a big family and like all families, when a new member looks out for joining it, looks at him with skepticism and "analyzes" him before accepting. Nobody ever receives a welcome letter, but you'll immediately notice if you are accepted. Luge is a big family and like all families, among its members there are people that you could not do without. The ones which presence you don't notice so much as the absence. The ones that make you feel home. When you're on the tracks instinctively you look for them and when you're sitting on the sofa watching races on TV, you see them in the background of the shots.

Luge is a big family and like all families is composed of multiple nuclei, reunited in the FIL, but quite distinct: representatives of the Federation, teams, journalists, operators of the tracks, fans. Although they are aware of being part of the same world, the components of the various nuclei are animated by its own parochialism that, in some circumstances, puts them in opposition and antagonism than the others.

Luge is a big family and like all families on some occasions meets in convivial dinners. When, during one of these dinners in January 2012, one of the sine qua non components told me: "Luge is a big family and you're part of it", I realized that I have really become a member of that world. Even if I still don't know how to define my role, I am aware of having one.

Sorprendente avvio di stagione a Lillehammer. Dominik Fischnaller vince la sua prima gara "senior" - Amazing start to the season in Lillehammer . Dominik Fischnaller wins his first "senior" race

Dopo quattro anni di assenza dalla pista delle Olimpiadi del 1994, come spesso succede quando le competizioni si svolgono al di fuori della Germania, il week-end norvegese ha aperto la stagione con un susseguirsi di sorprese.

Sin dalla Nations Cup del venerdì il prevedibile copione è stato sovvertito. I favoritissimi giovani tedeschi hanno deluso le aspettative. Julian von Schleinitz non ha portato a termine la discesa e Dajana Eitberger, a causa di un grave errore nell'ultimo tratto, è arrivata ultima. Ne ha saputo approfittare lo squadrone russo che, comandato da Walter Plaikner, ha occupato ben 7 dei 9 posti disponibili sul podio. Nations Cup. 

Il programma ufficiale si è aperto con il doppio, gara in cui il risultato finale è stato in linea con quelli della scorsa stagione, grazie alla doppietta tedesca di Wendl-Arlt e Eggert-Benecken, seguita dai fratelli austriaci Linger. A ben analizzare le due manches salta all'occhio lo straordinario recupero degli Italiani Oberstolz-Gruber, risaliti dal 13° al 4° posto, grazie anche alla buona velocità nella seconda discesa. Anche le donne hanno saputo mischiare le carte in tavola, soprattutto nella prima manche, in cui ha chiuso in testa la statunitense Kate Hansen, vincitrice dei trials nonostante un piede rotto, seguita dalla solita Geisenberger e dalla Russa Ivanova. Ottimi piazzamenti anche delle Italiane: Sandra Gasparini ha stabilito la miglior velocità assoluta e la nipote acquisita di Armin Zöggeler, Sandra Robatscher, ha ottenuto un brillante 7° posto, purtroppo vanificato nella seconda discesa. La seconda manches ha visto l'ennesimo trionfo di Natalie Geisenberger, seguita da Ivanova e dalla Canadese Gough. I podi completamente tedeschi, almeno fra le signore, diventeranno un ricordo? In quest'occasione per le "veterane" teutoniche è stata una vera e propria disfatta: Anke Wischnewski grazie ad un buon recupero ha chiuso 7° e Tatjana Hüfner, condizionata dal mal di schiena, si è piazzata solo 13° . In un climax, il gran finale si è avuto con il Singolo Uomini, letteralmente dominato dal ventenne Dominik Fischnaller, erede designato di Armin Zöggeler, che ha anche stabilito il record della pista, fino ad oggi nelle mani di Georg Hackl. Il giovane carabiniere di Maranza, aiutato nella prima manche da un errore di Felix Loch, è riuscito a mantenere saldi i nervi e a confermarsi nella seconda discesa, ottenendo la miglior velocità di manche.

Sulla pista dove ottenne la sua prima medaglia olimpica, il maresciallo di Foiana agguanta un buon 4° posto a soli 86 millesimi dal suo 100° podio in Coppa del Mondo, che ci auguriamo sarà solo rimandato di qualche settimana. Singolo Uomini

After four years of absence from the track of the 1994 Olympics, as often happens when competitions are held outside of Germany, the weekend in Norway opens the season with a succession of surprises.

Since the Friday’s Nations Cup the predictable script has been subverted. The most favored young Germans have fallen short of expectations. Julian von Schleinitz has not completed the run and Dajana Eitberger come last because of a serious error in the final section. The Russian squadron, guided by Walter Plaikner, has been able to take advantage from the situation occuping 7 of the 9 seats on the podium. Nations Cup. 

The official program began with the Doubles race where the final result was in line with those of last season, thanks to the 1^st and 2^nd places of the Germans Wendl-Arlt and Eggert-Benecken, followed by the Austrian Linger brothers. A closer analysis of the two heats will notice the extraordinary recovery of the Italians Oberstolz-Gruber, edged up from 13th to 4th place, thanks to the good speed in the second run . Doubles

Even women have been able to shuffle the cards on the table, especially in the first run, in which the American Kate Hansen, winner of the US trials despite a broken foot, closed 1st,  followed by the usual Geisenberger and the Russian Ivanova. Good placements also for the Italians: Sandra Gasparini has established the best absolute speed and Sandra Robatscher, Armin Zöggeler's niece, got a brilliant 7th place, unfortunately thrown away in the second run. At the end arrived another triumph of Natalie Geisenberger, followed by Tatiana Ivanova and the Canadian Alex Gough. Wonder if the the completely German podiums, at least among the ladies, become a memory. On this occasion, for the Teutonic "veterans"  was a real defeat: Anke Wischnewski finished 7th thanks to a good recovery and Tatjana Hüfner, conditioned by back pain, finished just 13th. Women

In a climax, the grand finale has been with the Men Single, literally dominated by Dominik Fischnaller, the twenty years old designated heir of Armin Zöggeler, who also established the track record, till today in the hands of the three times Olympic champion Georg Hackl. The young Carabiniere from Maranza, helped by a mistake  of Felix Loch in the first run, was able to maintain balanced his nerves and confirmed itself in the second run, getting the highest speed of the manche. On the track where won his first Olympic medal, the Marshal of Foiana grabs a good 4th place just 86 milliseconds from its 100th podium in the World Cup, which we hope will be only delayed a few weeks. Men

Il fine settimana comincia la stagione, che culminerà a febbraio con le Olimpiadi Invernali di Sochi (Russia). In avvio di Coppa del Mondo sono state diffuse le "lista di merito", ovvero gli atleti che hanno diritto a partecipare alla Coppa del Mondo senza affrontare la qualificazione del venerdì.
Il regolamento FIL prevede che queste liste scaturiscano non dal risultato globale della stagione precedente, ma da quello delle sole ultime tre tappe di Coppa del Mondo.

La Nations Cup qualificherà i restanti atleti -17 uomini, 14 donne e 10 doppi-, tenendo comunque conto delle quote spettanti a ciascun paese: 5 uomini, 4 donne e 3 doppi.
