Giovani Italiani crescono - Young Italians growing

This season will be very important for the growth of the young talents of the Italian national team.

After years of waiting, thanks to the excellent results obtained, Florian Gruber and Simon Kainzwaldner have entered in the Carabinieri Sports Group.

For them the season  began uphill because of a crash in Winterberg, which caused to Florian a rush to the hospital and several stitches to the elbow to suture a rather deep wound.

While Florian healed, Simon was in Rome for the enrollment.
Although they have returned to training  just on November 26th, at Igls they finished 4th in the Nations Cup and 9th in the World Cup.

Unfortunately, now they will take a break from competitive activity, skipping the trip to North American, because the Carabinieri Sports Group has organized a
45 days course for the new recruits, which will begin on December 14 th.

"We planned in this period the course for new recruits, because the majority of the approximately 50 participants practice summer disciplines" explained Colonel Alberto Minati, head of the Centro Sportivo Carabinieri. "Now we will try to meet the needs of the lugers. In the barracks they'll be able to workout at the gym, they will go home for the Christmas break and we will do so that they may go to Germany for the two weeks of the World Championships (Ed: one ITW followed by the World Championships).

Also this year Theo Gruber will be divided between the Junior and the Senior team. After Igls he hasn't left for North America with the rest of the World Cup's team, but he will join the Junior WC until Christmas holidays. In January, he will get back to the senior World Cups with a clear idea on what are his objectives. "In January, I will start again with the senior races and I'll try to qualify for the World Championships in Königssee. It won't be easy, but I know to have the capabilities and the means to do that!" told us Theo.

Obviously Theo will also take part in the Junior World Championships in Winterberg (GER), scheduled for February 6th and 7th, one week later than the World Championships of Königssee.

After the double surgical intervention on her shoulders, Andrea Vötter, has devoted the summer months to recover,  but the stresses of a real race are very different from those of

a workout.
On Saturday, at the end of the first heat Vötter was 13th. However, during the start of the second run she heard a "clack": the left shoulder was out of the correct position! With incredible cold blood, after having moved her shoulder in  the right place, she completed the competition, finishing in 23rd place.
Past the finish line and lowered the tension, some tears have dropped down, though, between pain and fear, Andrea confessed to us that the second had been much bigger.

Now it's time to competes in America and Andi will be with the team, sure that with time and race after race improvements will be more tangible.

"I would have preferred to leave to her the place in the team for the relay, so that she could close the weekend with a good result," told us Sandra Robatscher. "But Andrea has insisted that, for the good of the team, I would have had to take part in the competition."
We can't know what would have happened if Vötter had competed, but in retrospect, given the splendid 3rd place finish in the team event, we can say it has been a good decision. Andi is 20 and, once she will be fully recovered from the operations, she'll take part in many and many other team relay.

The 2015/16 season is going to start, we introduce you the Italian team - La stagione 2015/16 sta per cominciare, vi presentiamo la squadra italiana

A few days before the beginning of the season, I decided to write short presentations of the Italian team's athletes, especially dedicated to those who don't know our athletes yet, also making the point on how we left them before the summer break.

DOMINIK FISCHNALLER He is the top athlete of the team after Armin Zöggeler's retirement. He’s been discovered by Gerda Weissensteiner when he was about 9 years old and since that moment followed the steps of his older brother Hanspeter, who was a luger and retired one year ago.
Last season: He started well with 3 podiums, but in the second part of the season got just a 3rd place in Lillehammer and closed the World Cup 4th in the overall standing. In Sigulda for the World Championship wanted to get the top spot, but due to a bad mistake, he lost also the second position he had taken in the first run and finished 13th.

KEVIN FISCHNALLER Cousin of Dominik, he is a really good driver, but he still has to improve in the start phase. It's not a casuality that he got his only podium during a Sprint Cup, in which the start is less important.
Last season: He took his career's first podium during the Sprint Cup in Igls and closed the WC with a 17th place in the overall standing.

EMANUEL RIEDER He has been a soccer player since he was a kid and still plays, but he lives in Meransen, where the start track has been an irresistible attraction for him and, as a teenager, Emanuel become also a luger.
Last season: He has finished the WC in the 19th position of the overall standing.

THEO GRUBER He is the younger in the team (03/24/1996) and during last season he took part both in Junior and senior WC. In the general overall standing has finished 48th, but in the JWC he's been 10th and obtained also a victory in Igls. He has been 11rd in the Junior WCh in Lillehammer

CHRISTIAN OBERSTOLZ/PATRICK GRUBER They are the veterans of the entire luge circuit. Competing together in the National team since 1997, they have no intention to give up. Despite some back problems, normal after twenty years of career in luge, they won the bronze medal at the last WCh in Sigulda.
Last season: They closed the WC with a 5th place.

LUDWIG RIEDER/PATRICK RASTNER They are one of the best doubles of the last years, even if so far they haven’t been able to get a victory at senior level. Until the spring of 2014 Ludwig was almost blind because of a severe myopia, then surgically solved.
Last season: They closed the WC 8th in the overall standing and have been 5th at the WCh.

FLORIAN GRUBER/ SIMON KAINZWALDNER This young double (both 1994), Youth Olympic Champions of Innsbruck 2012, has been one of the surprises of last season, ending 10th in the overall standing of the WC. They are the only athletes of the Italian luge National team (with Theo) not recruited in a sport military group.

SANDRA ROBATSCHER In Italy it’s not easy to be a luger and it looks harder for women, but she is completely focalized on her physical and technical development. Nephew of Armin Zöggeler's wife, she is at top level since years between the Juniors (she’s still 19).
Last season: She closed the WC with a 17th place in the overall standing and won the bronze medal at the JWCh in Lillehammer.

ANDREA VÖTTER She has been school mate of Sandra Robatscher and of the natural track champion Greta Pinggera. As her friends also Andrea is still working to improve her technical knowhow to reach better positions. During last summer she has undergone surgery to both shoulders.
Last season: She closed the WC in 19th position, she's been 5th in the JWCh in Lillehammer and 18th in the WCh of Sigulda, where with the team has been 4th in the Team Relay.

CHRISTIAN OBERSTOLZ/PATRICK GRUBER Sono i veterani dell'intero circuito dello slittino.
