„New entry“ su pista artificiale: Greta Pinggera - New entry on the artificial track: Greta Pinggera

F&C: Sarà difficile a 19 anni.

G.P.: Tutti e nessuno in particolare.

A radical change at 19 years old. For some a bit late, but who knows the character, knows that Greta Pinggera never gives up, indeed. The news, leaked out in the last days of May, comforted us a little by the shock of the unespected retire of Sandra Gasparini. It's not that Greta Pinggera will immediately replace the Sterzing's blonde, but it's always good to have an athlete of her caliber within the "parish" of artificial track luge.
Greta Pinggera was born in 1995 and lives in Lasa in Val Venosta, where her parents manage an excellent confectionery. At the moment she's concentrating on her Maturità exams, that will give at the sport school of Mals Venosta. We have heard the girl to ask some questions.

Fast&Cool: Greta, how did you take the decision to switch from natural track to artificial track luge?

Greta Pinggera: To tell the truth, I had already tried a few years ago, but then I returned to natural track luge, that I still like very much. If I'm honest, I find it more dynamic. I won a lot. During the latter winter, in Romania, I also conquired the Junior World Champion title. However, with a cool head, I also realized that the luge on the road is at a dead end, does not give prospects. You can win all, but unfortunately the illusion of an Olympic participation will always remain a utopia. To be honest I don't see the will to change, to get out of the routine of those who are content with a few races, beautiful to watch, but basically with no international echo. And so I opted for the change.

F&C: It will be hard at 19 years old.

G.P.: I'm perfectly aware. But I have a character all mine: I want to make the pots with lids and I never give up when faced with difficulties. I just know that I will do my best. I've already some experience and the words of different coaches give me confidence.

F&C: Has there been someone in particular who inspired you to make this choice?

G.P.: Everyone and no one in particular. My different coaches have always highlighted my good position on the sled and my physical characteristics. They all have argued that I'd be the ideal athlete for the artificial track. Then also my boyfriend, the pluri World Champion on natural track Patrick Pigneter, suggested me to try. And here I am, ready for a new challenge.

F&C: Italy has found the new Sandra Gasparini?

G.P.: Don't burn the steps, let's keep our feet on the ground! First of all, I'm Greta and not Sandra. By now I will experience in the junior team. I've still one year in this category and I want to enjoy its benefits in order to grow, to learn, to assimilate the most of the particularities of going down in an iced track. One year is not much, but I will work with passion and enthusiasm. Then what will be, will be.

F&C: At the bottom of your heart, are you making a little thought to the Olympic Games?

G.P.: Of course! For every athlete the Olympics are the big dream, but for me this is still a far away thought. One step after another - this is my motto. First of all, I have to do well at junior level, that's all.

F&C: With you the women's team is enriched with a further very young element.

G.P.: Yes, with Sandra Robatscher and Andrea Vötter we are coetaneous, but they have much more experience on the artificial track and I think they will already compete in the World Cup. This won't be my case, but will be my goal and I'm sure that we will charge and spur each other.

On Saturday, March 1st Foiana di Lana (BZ) celebrated its most famous citizen: Armin Zöggeler.

Winning the sixth Olympic medal in the same discipline, in 6 different editions of the Olympic Games, the Marshal of the Carabinieri has entered into history, accomplishing a feat never managed to any other athlete. Despite this, the celebrations have been simple and familiar, reflecting the character of their protagonist.

In the presence of relatives, friends, teammates, and the entire local community, there was a (long) celebration by the authorities, made of speeches interspersed by the projection of video stories of Zöggeler's career and by the delivery of various prizes and commemorative trophies, such as, for example, a caricature celebrating his appointment as honorary citizen of Lana and a framework, reminder of the 57 individual victories obtained in the World Cup.

What naively surprise me all times, when I visit Süd Tirol, is that the official language of the event, in spite of the presence of representatives of the FISI and the Carabinieri, has been the dialect, difficult even for those who, like me, has to face it since years, thanks to the assiduous frequentation with the Italian Luge National Team and its entourage. But the wonder passes every time more quickly and you adapt to local practices.

Predictably, Armin didn't give a definitive answer to the question on everyone's mind: will continue the agonistic activity or the Sochi Olympics have been the last chapter? Remaining vague, reiterated that he will reflect and, if he keeps feeling good physically, he will evaluate whether to continue to compete.
